Summer Reading 2009-2010

One Book, One Film, One School

Summer Reading 2009-2010

One Book, One Film, One School is a school-wide community project at Holy Cross High School that promotes a common literacy and visual experience.  Because this year there is a film version of the book we have chosen, we are also promoting visual literacy, which is becoming increasingly important in our high tech society.  The book for the 2009-2010 school year is Steve Lopez's The Soloist:   A Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive power of music.  The subtitle reveals much about the themes of the book which crosses the curriculum in many ways. In the book, Steve Lopez begins an unlikely friendship with Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless schizophrenic musician.   Students are required to read the book over the summer months prior to the 2009-2010 school year.  Students will discuss and be assessed on the book in their classes. Cross-cultural connections and social justice issues with be explored. Furthermore, the visual elements of the film will be analyzed.  We invite the entire community to read the book and see the movie.  You can purchase the summer reading book online by clicking the Varsity Books icon below.
