Mathematics Department

The philosophy of the Mathematics Department is to inspire in all of our students a sense of wonder about the universe and a desire to understand and describe it. Towards that end we will offer courses that will provide the student with the graphical, analytical, geometric, trigonometric, statistical, and programming skills to describe the world quantitatively and to provide a solid foundation for undergraduate study, military service, or employment. Direct instruction will be mixed with cooperative efforts to develop lifetime learners and to enhance student comprehension, retention, and metacognition.

Upon graduation from Holy Cross High School a student will be able to:

~Perform operations on real numbers in the proper order

~Understand the nature and use of a variable

~Apply the basic properties of algebra

~Apply methods of solution, including uses of inverses and identities,

to the solution of linear equations, systems of linear equations, and linear inequalities

~Understand and communicate with appropriate mathematics vocabulary

~Apply the methods of factoring, quadratic formula, tracing of intercepts, to

the solution of higher order equations

~Graphically represent solution sets of equations and inequalities on the

Cartesian Coordinate Plane or number line

~Apply the rudiments of right triangle trigonometry

~Translate English problems to the appropriate mathematical structure

~Understand the mathematics of finance

~Construct inductive and deductive proof

~Calculate the appropriate measurement, with correct units, of one, two, and

  three dimensional shapes

~Determine appropriate angle relationships and measurement

~Apply and find similar and congruent shapes

~Use a graphing calculator for problem solution

~Access and use appropriate software and/or web sites for problem solution

~Understand and apply a functional relationship

~Identify different types of problems and ascertain the appropriate method of solution

~Apply and use basic statistical and probability concepts

~Recognize and use connections between mathematical disciplines

The Mathematics Department will strive to work with other disciplines and the community to enrich the learning environment.
